Featured Artist | Rozanah Windyputri | Heartbreak in Paradise

We can never predict when songwriting inspiration will strike. Melodies have been pouring out of Rozanah Windyputri ever since she got her first keyboard at age 9. Lyrics swam around in her head for years. Then, like a tropical storm that hit when least expected, came “Heartbreak in Paradise.”

Being creative is when we can turn negativity into an artwork. That’s how art saves your life!

What are you trying to communicate with “Heartbreak in Paradise”?

“Heartbreak in Paradise” is a song about feeling heartbroken in a joyful place. I wrote it at my favorite beach. It’s a beautiful place. People love to chill there. But I started to realize that not everyone was enjoying their vacation. Some people were there trying to heal their broken soul.

What does “being creative” mean to you?

Being creative is when we can turn negativity into an artwork. We’ve seen a lot of people out there that are struggling with insecurity, anxiety, and depression. They need to express themselves in a positive way, through art, so they can feel better. And that’s how art saves your life!

What elements do you consider when finalizing a new song?

I usually emphasize the feelings. So I make sure that people will feel what I try to convey from my song or lyrics. I also think about how the music will sound in the final production and try to choose suitable instruments.

On the topic of convention vs. creativity, do you try to follow any songwriting “rules” with your writing?

I guess there’s no strict rule needed to write a song. Just write what you want and don’t be afraid to be different. Just be yourself! But from my perspective, adding rhyme, unusual word, or idiom will give the song extra points.

This song reminds me a bit of early Radiohead. 90’s revival all the way.. Love it!
